Weekly Devotional: God our Friend

from the September 20, 2026 message
speaker: Pastor Timmy Rotter

Day 1: The God Who Speaks Face to Face
Reading: Exodus 33:7-11
Devotional:
Moses experienced something rare and extraordinary -- God speaking to him face to face, as one speaks to a friend. The tent of meeting stood outside the camp, and the people watched from a distance, longing for what Moses had but unwilling to draw close themselves. This is a picture many of us live in daily. We know God is present, we sense his reality, but we keep him at a convenient distance. God was never satisfied with that arrangement. He did not design religion to be observed from the outside. He designed it to be lived from the inside, in his presence, close enough to hear him speak.
Reflection:
Are you watching God from a distance, or are you stepping into his presence?
Practical Application:
Set aside ten minutes today with no agenda other than simply being in God's presence. Do not bring a list of requests. Just be still and acknowledge that he is near.

Day 2: The Friendship That Cost Everything
Reading:
Romans 5:6-11
Devotional:
Paul makes one of the most staggering declarations in all of Scripture when he describes God demonstrating his love not after humanity cleaned itself up, but while people were still sinners and enemies. The word "but" in verse 8 functions as a turning point -- not because of anything humanity did, but because of who God is. He initiated. He paid. He restored. The sermon reminded us that God did not simply save us from something. He saved us into something -- into friendship, into sonship, into restored relationship. Salvation is not the finish line. It is the starting line of a life lived in nearness to God.
Reflection:
Do you treat your salvation as a destination or as a doorway into deeper friendship with God?
Practical Application:
Write down one way your daily life would look different if you truly believed God called you his friend and not merely his forgiven servant.

Day 3: Chosen, Not Earned
Reading:
John 15:12-17
Devotional:
Jesus told his disciples something that should have stopped them completely in their tracks -- he chose them. They did not choose him first. This is the nature of divine friendship. It is not built on what you bring to the table. It is built on what he already brought. He laid down his life, which he himself declared to be the greatest expression of love possible. This friendship transforms obedience from a burden into a response. When you understand that someone gave everything for you, following their lead is no longer a reluctant duty. It becomes the most natural expression of gratitude imaginable.
Reflection:
Are you obeying God out of obligation or out of overflow from a friendship you genuinely treasure?
Practical Application:
Identify one area of obedience in your life that still feels like a burden. Spend time today asking God to help you see it through the lens of his love rather than through the lens of duty.

Day 4: The God Who Confides in You
Reading:
Psalm 25:12-14
Devotional:
The psalmist writes that God shares his covenant, his secrets, with those who fear him. This is not the language of a distant king issuing decrees from a throne room. This is the language of a trusted friend leaning in close. Scripture is not merely a rulebook or a historical document. It is the primary place where God speaks intimately to those who will listen. Prayer is not merely a request line. It is a conversation between friends. The sermon described this as the refrigerator-rights level of friendship -- the kind where you are fully known and fully welcome. That is what God is offering you every single day.
Reflection:
How often do you approach Scripture as a place where God is personally speaking to you rather than as a religious obligation to complete?
Practical Application:
Read one psalm today slowly, treating it as a personal conversation between you and God. Respond in writing or in spoken prayer as though you are replying to a friend who just shared something meaningful with you.

Day 5: Running With God
Reading:
Psalm 34:15-18
Devotional:
The sermon closed with a vivid and honest moment -- a missionary running a difficult race in the Hawaiian heat, asking God for strength to perform better, and sensing God simply say, "Can I just run with you?" That single question reframes everything. God is not primarily interested in your performance. He is not standing at the finish line grading your time. He is beside you in the middle of the hardest stretch, wanting to be present with you in it. Psalm 34 confirms this -- God is close to the brokenhearted. He does not wait for you to recover before drawing near. He draws near precisely when you are most undone.
Reflection:
In what area of your life have you been asking God to improve your results when he may simply be inviting you to let him run alongside you?
Practical Application:
Identify one hard or exhausting season you are currently walking through. Rather than asking God to fix it immediately, ask him today to simply be with you in it, and then practice paying attention to the ways he shows up.
